Abstract
1310493 Valves SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 March 1970 [11 Jan 1969 4 Feb 1969] 1760/69 and 9997/69 Heading F2V [Also in Division F4] An air inlet unit for mounting in a vehicle dashboard comprises a housing 1 containing a universally swivellable nozzle 3 at its downstream end, a valve member 14, a shaft 9 with universal or flexible couplings at both ends interconnecting the nozzle 3 and valve member 14 and an arm 16 of the shaft 19 which so co-operates with member 14 that rotation of the shaft 9 by nozzle 3 produces opening or closing movement of member 14. In the form shown, a part cylindrical lug 17 projects from valve member 14 and the free end of arm 16 runs in a slot 18 in the lug 17. In the fully open position of the valve member 14, the lug 17 is closely spaced from the housing 1 throughout its length and the shaft 9 is received in a recess 20. The shaft 9 may include flexible members and is telescopic if the coupling between nozzle 3 and shaft 9 is not arranged at the centre of rotation of nozzle 3. The shaft 9 and a spindle 6 of nozzle 3 may be replaced by a single flexible cable. In another embodiment, the valve member 14 is spring- biased to its open position and the arm 16 of shaft 9 contacts a circular row of recesses in the member 14 to hold the member 14 in any selected position. The shaft 9 may include two spaced arms 16 at right angles to one another, which contact member 14 in turn when shaft 9 is rotated. The member 14 is slightly elliptical in shape. A bezel 2 of housing 1 is removable and may include stops to limit the angular movement of nozzle 3. The shaft 9 may be arranged to act as a light guide to indicate the position of the member 14.
