Abstract
959,386. Nuclear fuel elements. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Sept. 27,1961 [Oct. 5, 1960], No. 34221/60. Heading G6C. A fuel element for a nuclear reactor comprises a hollow casing with an annular array of parallel fuel rods located within the casing and surrounding a central fuel-free region, each fuel rod contacting both the internal wall of the casing and laterally adjacent ones of the fuel rods. Such an arrangement is shown in Fig. 2, twelve fuel rods 10 being disposed about a central rod 11 of a low neutron absorbing material, e.g. beryllium oxide or magnesium oxide, within and contacting the inner wall of a surrounding hollow casing 14. The central rod 11 is enclosed in a steel casing 12 while the fuel rods 10 are housed in sheaths each having an external helical fin 13 contacting the adjacent fuel rods 10, the casing 12 and the hollow casing 14. Instead of having a central rod 11, coolant may flow through the central region enclosed by the fuel rods 10. Compared with a conventional 19- fuel rod cluster which would have an inner ring of fuel rods and a central fuel rod, the fall in neutron flux towards the centre of the cluster is much reduced.
