In a sewing machine bobbin-winding device having a bobbin-receiving spindle rotatable by a wheel moveable bodily into and out of engagement with a drive wheel, and a movable shoe engagable by. the peripheny of thread wound to a predetermined depth on a bobbin to disengage the movable wheel from the drive wheel, a control lever, carrying skid shoe and a finger piece, is manually movable by the finger piece to press upon a spring-biased lever to turn the latter to a position in which a stop part of the control lever lockingly engages a part of the spring-biased lever and the movable wheel engages the drive wheel, the control lever being also movable by the finger piece to its initial position in which the shoe is shifted clear of the bobbin and the spring-biased lever is tripped to disengage the movable wheel from the drive wheel. As shown, a spindle 3, carring a wheel 5 and adapted to receive a bobbin 26, is journalled in an arm 11 which is pivoted at 12 to a lever 6 and is biased by a spring 13 against a lug 14 on the latter. One end of lever 6 is pivoted at 7 to the machine frame and the other end has a slot 18 engaged with a fixed pin 17. A control lever 9, pivoted at 10 on the machine frame, carries on one arm a finger piece 23 and on the other arm a shoe 25 disposed adjacent the bobbin 26. In the inoperative position of lever 9, finger piece 23 is raised, and a spring 15 connected between levers 6 and 9 biases lug 19 on lever 6 against an edge 28 on lever 9. If finger piece 23 is depressed to shift lever 9 to the operative position, shoe 25 is moved nearer the bobbin and lug 19 enters a notch 29 in lever 9 to shift wheel 5 into engagement with a driving wheel 16. Thread wound on bobbin 26 to a sufficient depth engages shoe 25 to trip lever 6 for disengaging wheel 5 from wheel 16. Lever 9 may, however, be returned at any time to the inoperative position, by manipulation of finger piece 23,to trip lever 6.
