A looptaker 16, lying in an open cavity 35, is carried by a shaft (25) rigid with a driving pinion 22, and journals a bobbin 42. A shaft 44, axially slidable in shaft (25), is rigid at its lower end with a collar 46 having a pin 47 extending into a recess 48 in pinion 22, and is rigid at its upper end with a bobbin-winding member 43 having a pin 49 engageable with a recess in bobbin 42 when shaft 44 is raised. A fixed bracket 65 has an upper arm 63 carrying a depending rod 64 which passes through an aperture in an arm 68 of a movable member 67 also having an arm 72 sandwiched between collar 46 and a stop nut 73 on shaft 44. A sprimg 82, interposed between arms 63 and 68, biases shaft 44 downwardly. A lever 76, pivoted at 75 to bracket 65, has an arm 81 engaging arm 68 and an arm 90 engaging one arm 86 of a bell crank lever pivoted at 85 to bracket 65. A spring 89, interposed between arm 86 and an arm 66 of bracket 65, biases the second arm 87 of the bell crank lever towards member 67. A third and vertical arm 77 of lever 76 passes. through the space between looptaker 16 and a side wall of cavity 35. The upper end of arm 77 has an offset thumb piece 78 and an extension 79 ending in an offset lug 80. When a slidable cover plate 36 is opened to uncover cavity 35, thumb piece 78 may be depressed to turn lever 76 clockwise, whereby arm 81 raises member 67 against the bias of spring 82 to its operative position for coupling member 43 with bobbin 42, when arm 87 enters a notch 70 in member 67 to retain the latter in the operative position. On operation of the machine, the bobbin is then wound with thread drawn from the needle. When plate 36 is closed, the front edge 39 thereof engages lug 80 to turn lever 76 counterclockwise, whereby arm 87 is withdrawn from notch 70 and spring 82 returns member 67 to its inoperative position for terminating bobbin winding. Lever arms 81 and 90 are shorter than lever arm 77.
