Abstract

959,165. High vacuum pumps. BALZERPATENT-UND LIZENZ-ANSTALT. April 1, 1963 [April 2, 1962], No. 12754/63. Heading F1N. [Also in Division F4] A high vacuum pump comprises a suction tube 1 connected by a flange 2 to the vessel to be evacuated and surrounded by a shell 6 spaced therefrom so as to provide an annular space occupied by a coil 5 having spaced turns through which is fed a compressed coolant gas, e.g., hydrogen helium or neon admitted through an inlet 7 and expanded at a valve 11 to provided a pool of liquid coolant 4, surrounding the closed end 3 of the tube 1 and from which coolant vapour is exhausted through a coil formed between the turns of coil 5 and which is in good thermal contact with the flanged end of tube 1 thereby serving to cool the same. A turbine or piston expansion engine 9 in parallel with the coil 5 serves to cool the hydrogen prior to expansion at valve 11. The apparatus also includes an evacuated casing 14 connected to a diffusion pump 15 which communicates with tube 1 through apertures 16.
