Abstract

959,059. Moulding rubber mats. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Feb. 28, 1962, No. 7775/62. Heading B5A. A mat is made by vacuum moulding a rubber blank and then vulcanizing the blank by applying heat through the moulding face. The mould base 1 has an insert 3 with the desired surface configuration and is bounded by a strip 4 which has a groove 5 and air bleeds 6 connected to a vacuum chamber 7, this arrangement serving to conform the rubber blank 12 to the mould shape. The rubber is then vulcanized by a source of heat, e.g. electric element, steam pipes, in the mould base 1, the process being facilitated by an insulating blanket or hood over the blank. The steam pipes may be embedded in a good conductor below the mould base with a layer of insulating material below. When the insert 3 is exposed its temperature is below the necessary vulcanization temperature, but when the blank and insulating blanket are applied its temperature rises to a suitable vulcanization temperature. The whole apparatus may be mounted on a sloping frame.
