Abstract
1,202,702. Moulding pneumatic tyres. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 9 Nov., 1967 [15 Nov., 1966], No. 51115/66. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B7] A method of manufacturing a pneumatic tyre comprises building a tyre casing of uncured rubberized cord material with or without an uncured tread portion of elastomeric material, moulding the casing to its desired final configuration, and at least partially curing the casing, applying an uncured tread portion of elastomeric material to the moulded and at least partially cured casing except when the tread portion is built on to the casing and curing and moulding the uncured tread portion upon the at least partially cured casing. Preferably, the casing is cooled during curing and moulding of the tread portion to prevent overcure. The outer surface of the at least partially cured casing may be buffed before the tread is applied thereto. The latter may be applied by placing the casing between parallel side members, applying the tread portion to the outer surface of the casing between the members and curing and moulding the tread portion between the members and a plurality of movable moulding segments applied to the outer surface of the tread portion. Alternatively, the completelybuilt, uncured tyre is cured in two stages. Firstly, the casing is at least partially cured by heating it in a mould which has no tread pattern. Then, the tread and, if necessary, the partially cured casing are heated to completely cure the tyre, a tread curing ring provided with a tread pattern moulding matrix being used.
