958,283. Compressors; intake silencers. MASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. Aug. 3, 1961 [June 29, 1961], No. 28299/61. Headings F1B and F1N. A piston compressor, Fig. 1, comprises a cylinder 2, a piston 3 and a suction valve 4 the latter being controlled by means 8 so that the valve is held open when the pressure in an air tank 7 reaches a predetermined value, a suction pipe line 9 leading to the valve 4 having provided therein a nozzle 15, Fig. 2, which offers less resistance to air flowing into the cylinder than to air flowing from the cylinder, the nozzle being such that the velocity of the air flowing through the nozzle during use is greater than the speed of sound in the region of the nozzle constriction. The suction pipe line 9 may be provided at 10 with filters or silencers. The nozzle 15 may be used as a component of a volumetric measuring unit. The compressor may have a plurality of compression stages with or without intercooling.
