958,049. Transformers; transforming transmission-line impedances. MARELLI-LENKURT S.p.A. Aug. 2, 1961 [Aug. 3, 1960], No. 28110/61. Headings HIT and H1W. A transmission line transformer passing a wide band of frequencies comprises n-l bifilar line sections wound on the same core wherein n represents the maximum voltage transformation ratio, said sections having the same number of turns and being connected so that the input voltage of any section is added in phase to the output voltage of the same section, and the output voltage of each section is applied as the input voltage of the next section, the possible transformation ratios being r : s where r and s are whole numbers between 1 and n. Fig. 4 represents a transformer having four bifilar line sections wound on a core N. If a voltage E1 is applied between terminals 1 and 2 then a voltage of 2E1 is obtainable from terminals 1 and 4. Ratios 1 : 3, 1 : 4, up to a maximum ratio 1 : 5 are available if output is obtained between terminals 1 and 8, 1 and 12, 1 and 16 respectively. Many other transformation ratios are available depending on which terminals the signal voltage is applied to or the output tapped from. For example, if a voltage is applied to terminals 1 and 4, or between 1 and 8, or between 1 and 12 and the output taken from terminals 1 and 16 then ratios 2 : 5, 3 : 5, 4 : 5 are obtainable. Ratios 2 : 3 and 3 : 4 can be obtained if the input terminals are respectively 1 and 4, 1 and 8. The above voltage ratios apply only if the transformer is matched and if the whole winding is short compared with the wavelength of E1.
