957,840. Capsule-forming machines. M. K. MEHTA. Feb. 26, 1962 [March 13, 1961], No. 9132/61. Heading B8C. In a capsule-forming machine of the kind in which heated webs are drawn by suction into apertures in drums between which they pass, to produce the capsule halves, the apertures are arranged in rows in staggered formation and suction applied to each row by a single piston and cylinder, each aperture communicating with the respective cylinder of its row by a duct. The capsule may be sealed in a neutral atmosphere. Webs 20 pass round the heated drums beneath hoppers 24 measuring material into the recesses 21. Beneath each row of apertures 2 is an axial bore 4 in which operates a loose piston 5 reciprocated by a fixed cam 12 as the drum rotates. Alternate pistons are operated from opposite ends of the drum. A gland 7 seals the cylinder. After maximum withdrawal to form the recesses, the pistons advance to squeeze excess air from the capsules just prior to the nip of the drums and advance further later to ensure release of the capsules. The lips of the apertures sever the capsules from the webs. The capsule-forming area may be enclosed (not shown) so that production may take place in a neutral gas.
