A retaining member whicn presents a shoulder S at the end of a screw-threaded rod R, is constituted by a nut blank of flexible plastics material or rubber having a blind tapered bore B adapted to have screw threads formed therein on its rotation in contact with the screw threads on the rod. The retaining member has a cylindrical counterbore C of diameter commensurate with the external diameter of the rod R and leading into the tapered bore B.
