Abstract

957,428. Pressure-relieving devices for fluids. C. H. KIRK. July 29, 1960 [Nov. 4, 1959], No. 26397/60. Heading F2V. [Also in Divisions E1, F1 and F4] An expansion tank for a hot water heating system is formed by welding, brazing or soldering together two cup-shaped cylindrical bodies 11, 13, the top cup having a skirt 12 for this purpose and having a flexible diaphragm 20 held within it by a ring 23 and also having a connection 24 for communication with the hot water system, while the bottom cup 13 has a valve or seal 25 for retaining gas at superatmospheric pressure in the space below the diaphragm 20 which is shown distended by the water above it. The diaphragm is formed with a bead on its inner surface, Fig. 3 (not shown), for coaction with the ring 23 and may be preformed to fit beneath the dome 8 of the cup as indicated in chain line. It may be large enough to engage the dome 8 and not be preformed, in which case the open bottom of the cup 11 is closed temporarily by a board with a central opening through which air is passed to stretch the diaphragm up into the dome. To create the gas pressure, solid carbon dioxide may be introduced through an orifice 18 in the lower cup before the seal 25 is located, or a charge of air may be introduced through a valve in place of the seal. In the distended position shown, the water volume (above the diaphragm) is said to be half that of the gas volume (below the diaphragm). U.S.A. Specification 2,695,753 is referred to.
