Abstract

893,037. Roofs for tanks ; pressure-relieving devices for fluids. CHICAGO BRIDGE & IRON CO. Nov. 28, 1960 [Nov. 27, 1959 ; Feb. 24, 1960], No. 40747/60. Classes 69 (1) and 135. A cylindrical storage tank 11 has an inflated, annular, flexible tube 14 disposed between a floating roof 12 and the interior surface of the tank and pressure-regulating means for maintaining gas pressure in the tube within a predetermined range comprising a constant pressure reservoir 17 of variable volume which communicates with the tube 14 and has gas inlet 21 and outlet 23 means. The roof has a deck 13a supported on pontoons 13. The tube 14 is of fabric impregnated with synthetic rubber. The reservoir roof 19 is heavy enough to ensure the correct gas pressure in the tube 14 and is attached to the wall 17a by a flexible skirt 20. The inlet valve 21 admits gas from a pump, air bottle or the like whenever its actuating rod 21a touches the floor of a nearempty reservoir. An escape valve 22 on the outlet pipe 23 opens whenever its actuating rod 22a touches the roof 19 of the near-full reservoir. Alternatively, as in Fig. 4, the valve 21 is omitted and the reservoir is filled by a thermal gas-pump comprising a closed container 31 connected to one-way valves 37 and 38 with water seals 42 and 43. The maximum ambient daily temperature heats the air in the container 31 but then falls, causing the air to contract and suck in more air from outside, through the valve 37. Subsequently the rising temperature, after a cool night, expels air into the reservoir through the valve 38.
