Abstract

In a process for the preparation of a catalyst an inorganic oxide is contacted at elevated temperature with the vapour of a fluorine compound of general formula <FORM:0956684/B1-B2/1> in which X is C or S and Y is F or H. Examples of inorganic oxides are those of Group III and IV elements of the Periodic Table, e.g. Al2O3, B2O3, SiO\2, TiO2, and ZrO2. Preferably they have a surface area of 300-400 sq. metres/gm. or more. Specified fluorine compounds are CF4, CHF3, CH2F2 and the corresponding sulphur compounds. Additionally the catalyst may contain an hydrogenating metal selected from Group VIA or VIII of the Periodic Table, e.g. one or more of Cr. Mo, W, Fe, Co, Ni, or a Pt group metal. Examples compare the activity of catalysts treated with CF4 against those treated with tert-butyl fluoride or HF.
