Abstract

C4 and higher paraffin hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline range are isomerized by contact with hydrogen at a temperature up to 400 DEG F. in the presence of a catalyst prepared by contacting a halogenatable refractory oxide selected from Group III to V of the Periodic Table with a compound of formula <FORM:0980512/C4-C5/1> (where X and Y may be the same or different and selected from H, Cl, Br, F or SCl or where X and Y together may be O or S) under nonreducing conditions and at a temperature such that chlorine is taken up by the oxide without the production of free inorganic chloride, and thereafter contacting the chlorinated composite with an oxygen-containing gas at a temperature of 500-1200 DEG F. Typical isomerization conditions are Temperature: 50-400 DEG F. Pressure: atmospheric-2000 p.s.i.g. Space velocity: 0.5-10 v/v/hr. Hydrogen: H/C mol. ratio 0.01-20 : 1. Reference is made in the examples to the isomerization of 2 : 2-dimethylbutane. Specifications 953,187 and 953,189 are referred to.ALSO:An isomerization catalyst is prepared by contacting a halogenatable refractory oxide selected from Group III-V of the Periodic Table with a compound of general formula CCl2XY (where X and Y may be the same or different and selected from H, Cl, Br, F, or SCl, or where X and Y together may be O or S) under non-reducing conditions and at a temperature such that chlorine is taken up by the oxide without the production of free inorganic chloride, and thereafter contacting the chlorinated composite with an oxygen-containing gas at 500-1200 DEG F. Additionally the catalyst may contain a minor proportion of a metal (or compound thereof) from Group VIA or VIII of the Periodic Table, e.g. Cr. Mo, W, Fe, Co or Ni. Specified refractory oxides are Al2O3, B2O3, SiO2, TiO2, ZrO2 or mixtures thereof. Preferably they have a surface area of 250-350 m.2/gm. Specified halogenation agents are CCl4, CHCl3, CH2Cl2, CCl2F2, CCl3Br and CCl3SCl. Reference is made in the examples to the treatment of Pd and Pt on Al2O3 catalysts.
