Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the hydrogenation catalyst with high activity containing no chromium by a method wherein an alkali is added to a copper ion containing aqueous solution which contains a metallic oxide in a suspended condition and the alkali treated solution is subjectrd to reduction treatment.
CONSTITUTION: As the hydrogenation catalyst for preparing ethylene glycol or glycolic ester by hydrogenating oxalic diester, one prepared by a method wherein, to a copper ion containing aqueous solution which contains a metallic oxide such as SiO2, TiO2 or the like, an alkali such as an aqueous ammonium carbonate solution or the like is added to obtain metallic oxide precipitate on which a copper compound is precipitated and said precipitate is reduced by hydrogen or the like is used. The resulting hydrogenation catalyst has high activity and contains no chronium.
