Abstract

Sepn. of the hydrogen isotopes H, D, T for the selective removal of individual isotopes from a mixt., is effected by catalytic exchange between oxides of the isotopes and the gaseous isotopes, followed by low temp. distn. Exchange is carried out by countercurrent contact of the liq. oxides and gaseous isotopes in the presence of a catalyst which is resistant towards the liq. oxides. The process is more economical than usual and is useful in the removal of T or H from the heavy water used as moderator or coolant in nuclear plants. The catalyst pref. is hydrophobic.
