Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a colorless and purified phenol, by bringing active carbon which is treated with an acid and reduced into contact with a phenol, and by eliminating even a slight amount of an impurity effectively.
CONSTITUTION: A phenol is brought into contact with active carbon which is treated with an acid and reduced, and purified. The carbon may be treated with the acid and reduced successively and preferably treated with a compound having both effects, e.g. a reducing organic acid such as oxalic or ascorbic acid, at the same time. A phenol is advantageously dissolved in a solvent, e.g. water, a ketone or hydrocarbon, and the addition of a small amount of a stabilizer for the phenol, e.g. oxalic, sulfuric, citric, or ascorbic acid, to the solvent, is effective for prevention of discoloration. The carbon is preferably washed in advance to eliminate the fine powder.
