Abstract

956,599. Inflatable cushions. BRITISH VISQUEEN Ltd. June 6, 1962 [June 29, 1961], No. 23556/61. Heading A4M. [Also in Divisions B5 and B8] The overlapping edges 2, 3 of a sheet of plastics film folded to form a tube are seamed longitudinally at 5, 6, 5<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>1</SP>, and transversely at 8, 9, to leave an opening 7 between the overlaps for inflating the cushion thus formed. The seams 5<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>1</SP>, 9 may be omitted so that the end seam 10 of the bag forms one margin of the filling opening. The seams 8, 9 need not be at right angles to the seams 5, 6. The seams may be formed, simultaneously or in sequence, by suitably shaped heat sealing bars operating on the tube 1 as it is advanced continuously over a mandrel about which it is folded. The bags may be separated from the continuous length during the formation of the end seams 10, 11 or subsequently, and may be joined together by tearing lines. Suitable materials are polythene, polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride which latter may be seamed by high frequency electric welding.
