Abstract

<PICT:0956174/C1/1> The combustion chamber 1 of an internal combustion burner for glass fibre manufacture is provided with a metal grid 6 through which a mixture of combustible gases and oxidant passes to the chamber and a second grid 7 of parallel silica tubes close to the first grid and downstream of it. The grid 6 has a surface of high thermal absorbtivity provided either by oxidation or by coating with an oxide slip. The tubes 7 promote turbulence in the gases burning at the grid 6 and may be used for the passage of heating or cooling fluid or for housing electric heating elements. The combustion chamber inlet 9 has a jacket for the passage of a cooling agent which is spaced by a frame from the grid 6 and the chamber outlet 2 is cooled by a flow of refrigerant. The combustion chamber 1 is annular and the outlet 2 is in the form of a slot or slots surrounding a spinner 13 from which molten glass is ejected through perforations 14.
