Abstract

Textile printing compositions comprise an aqueous emulsion derived from a mixture of a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent and a hydrocarbon solvent, a colouring matter and an emulsifying agent, wherein the chlorinated hydrocarbon is used in a proportion which is up to 30% by weight of the combined said solvents. The colouring matter may be a pigment or a dyestuff as well as materials which produce discharge or resist effects but is especially a reactive dyestuff. The chlorinated hydrocarbons specified are methyl chloroform, trichloroethylene, methylene chloride, tetrachloroethylene or mixtures thereof and the specified hydrocarbons are petroleum distillates including xylene, white spirit and kerosene. The emulsifying agent is preferably non-ionic, e.g. an adduct of ethylene oxide with a fatty alcohol or higher alhylated phenol, but anionic agents may be used, e.g. dinaphthylmethane disulphonate. The compositions of the present invention may be of the oil-in-water or water-in-oil type and may be prepared with the aid of a high speed stirrer. They may further contain adjuvants, e.g. dyeing assistants, catalysts and other thickening agents (alginates are exemplified). The compositions may be applied to textile materials of natural or regenerated cellulose, cellulose esters, polyamides, aromatic polyesters, polypropylene, polyacrylonitrile, wool, silk, glass or mixtures thereof and then dried at 50-55 DEG C. and steamed at atmospheric pressure. Examples are given. Specifications 838,304 and 921,425 are referred to.
