Abstract

Textile fibres of polyalkylenes are coloured by treating them with an aqueous liquid in which is emulsified a solution of a dye in a substantially water-immiscible organic liquid of which a substantial proportion is a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon. Specified halogenated hydrocarbons are trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride, 1:2-dichlorethane, 1:2-dibromethane and 1:2-dichlorpropane which may be mixed with a hydrocarbon such as benzene, toluene, xylene or solvent naphtha. The water-immiscible dye solution contains at least 10% halogenated hydrocarbon and may be present in amounts of 0,5-10% of the weight of water in the dyebath. An emulsifying agent of the anionic, non-ionic or cationic type may be present in amount 0,5-2 grains per litre of aqueous dyebath and may be, for example, an ethylene oxide/aliphatic alcohol or alkyl phenol condensate, sulphonated castor oil, sulphated lauryl alcohol or cetyl trimethylammonium bromide. Suitable dyestuffs have a solubility of at most 2 mg. per litre in water at 80 DEG C. and may be azo or a -arylamino-antraquinone dyes free from sulphonic or carboxylic acid groups. Several solvent dyestuffs are specified. Dyeing may be accomplished at 50 DEG -110 DEG C. for 1/2 -3 hours, if desired, in a closed apparatus. Examples of dyeing polypropylene fibres are given.
