Abstract

Blends of crystalline polypropylene and polyamides, in particular blends containing 95-85% crystalline polypropylene and 5-15% of an interpolyamide obtained by polycondensation of 30-50% of hexamethylenediamine adipate and 70-50% of hexamethylenediamine sebacate, are dyed in the presence of o-phenylphenol and a cyclic hydrocarbon or chlorinated cyclic hydrocarbon at a temperature above 95 DEG C. Examples are given.ALSO:Materials of blends of crystalline polypropylene with polyamides are dyed in an aqueous bath above 95 DEG C. in the presence of o-phenylphenol and a cyclic hydrocarbon or chlorinated cyclic hydrocarbon which is a non-solvent under dyeing conditions for the material to be dyed, the weight ratio of o-phenylphenol to hydrocarbon being between 5:1 and 2:1. Particularly suitable blends contain 95-85% crystalline polypropylene and 5-15% of an interpolymer of 30-50% hexamethylenediamine adipate and 70-50% hexamethylenediamine sebacate. The o-phenylphenol may be used in the form of a salt, e.g. the sodium salt, or in its free state preferably in emulsified form. Specified hydrocarbons are xylene, decahydronaphthalene, tetrahydronaphthalene, o-dichlorobenzene and trichlorobenzene; they are preferably emulsified in water using an ethylene oxide/fatty alcohol condensate. Advantageously 3-6 g./l. of o-phenylphenol are used with the above weight ratio at 3:1 in a bath at 95 DEG -100 DEG C. The process is applicable to such materials as yarns, fibres, filaments, tows, cables, woven and knitted fabrics and films and the dyes used may be plastosoluble, basic, vat, reactive and especially acid and metallized dyestuffs. Examples are given.
