Abstract

[Also in Division F3] A structure for releasably supporting loads in aircraft comprises one or more frames 4 having means 18 for releasably attaching one or more loads 19, means being provided to displace the frame relatively to the aircraft on longitudinally extending tracks and so shift the load relatively to the centre of gravity of the aircraft, further means being provided to secure the frame in a selected position. Each frame 4 comprises a pair of box girders 5 interconnected by stays and carrying trunnions 6 at each end. On each trunnion is mounted a spider 7 having three radial legs in which rollers 8 are journalled to co-operate with the flanges of channel shaped rails 3 secured to the walls 2 of the stowage compartment in the aircraft. In addition at each end of the frame 4 is mounted a roller 10, which abuts the edge of flange 3a and so prevents lateral displacement of the frame. To lock the frame at a selected position along the rails, at least one trunnion carries a pin 11, Fig. 3, which can be moved by means of a handle 13, sliding in a U-shaped slot 14, into and out of engagement with holes 12 spaced along the rail 3. Preferably additional support means are provided and comprise overhead rails 15 parallel to rails 3 but of smaller section. U-shaped attaching means 16 carried by the girders 5 are secured to the rails 15 by inserting pins 17 into co-operating holes in the members 16 and 15. Loads 19, such as bombs or containers, are suspended from the frame and may be released by remote control. Arcuate arms 18 pivoted on the frame 4 bear against opposing sides of the loads and are simultaneously rotated into and out of position by linkage 21, 23 connected to bevel gearing which is rotated by means of a crank 25. To load the frame 4, a winch 26 is used in conjunction with a pulley 29 on the frame 4.
