730,969. Freight carrying aircraft. BLACKBURN & GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., BRUMBY, H., and WARBURTON, D. S. May 19, 1953 [May 21, 1952], No. 12877/52. Class 4. An aircraft has a freight compartment along the side walls of which are channel-section supporting rails intermediate the floor and ceiling, whereby bulky articles such as motor cars on special carriers, goods containers, cattle pens, sets of passenger seats or floor units all terminating in rollers may be raised to the level of the rails and slide therealong to be carried thereby. A deep fuselage 3, having a tail-carrying boom 4, has channel section supporting rails 16, 17 secured to the inside walls thereof, the open sides of the channels facing inwards to accommodate rollers mounted on the supporting arms 46 of loading platforms 43 or the like. A lift is located in the door end of the fuselage and comprises rails 21, 22, matching the rails 16, 17, respectively raised and lowered by screw jacks so that a platform 43 may be loaded on the rails 21, 22 and raised to a level where it may be run on to the rails 16, 17. The platforms may be locked in position by pins inserted through holes drilled in the flanges of the channels and they may be arranged to form a continuous floor to support seats or freight or they may be constructed individually as removable freight containers or cattle pens.
