In a hatch cover comprising two sections 2 and 3 (Fig. 3) meeting each other at the longitudinal length middle plane of the hatchway and movable laterally in a horizontal plane, each section 2, 3 is provided at its inner corners with extending arms 12, 13 respectively supporting sliding members (rollers 14) for co-operation with the undersides of guiding tracks 15, 16 arranged along the transverse sides of the hatch coaming and with a pair of supporting wheels 10 located a distance from the inner longitudinal edge of the section and running on tracks 11 along the transverse sides of the coaming. Pivotable parts 23 on the transverse sides of the coaming form extensions of the supporting tracks 11. Each section has a downwardly foldable abutment for supporting the section, in its open position, against the deck. In Fig. 4 the abutment is in the form of a rod 20 swing- able on a pin 21 in the section. In Fig. 2 the hatch section is divided into two parts 26, 27, the part 27 being dimensioned to form the abutment. The guiding tracks are provided with recesses (as at 25 in Fig. 3) so that in its open position the section rests on the supporting wheels and abutments without the members 14 reaching their tracks to impose a load on the arms.
