Abstract

Mixtures of alcohols containing 14-18 carbon atoms are prepared by heating a mixture of alcohols containing 7-9 carbon atoms together with sodium alkoxides and trialkyl borates which are derived from this mixture. The alkoxides may be obtained, for example, by heating the C2-C9 alcohol mixture with caustic soda and benzene and the tri-alkyl borates by heating the alcohol mixture with boric acid and benzene. The C14-C18 alcohol mixture may be condensed with ethylene oxide to give a detergent. The Provisional Specification describes also the preparation of mixtures of C20 alcohols by a similar method from mixtures of C10 alcohols.
