Abstract

Organic borate esters are made by mixing boric acid or a mixture of boron trioxide and boric acid, a primary or secondary alcohol containing from 2 to 12 carbon atoms in the molecule and having the formula ROH, and anhydrous calcium chloride, heating the mixture, allowing the product of the ensuing reaction to separate into two distinct layers and removing the upper layer of substantially pure trialkyl borate from the lower, R being an unsubstituted saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 2 to 12 carbon atoms, an unsubstituted alkenyl radical of 3 to 6 carbon atoms, a substituted saturated aliphatic radical of 1 to 6 carbon atoms having an aromatic hydrocarbon substituent, or a substituted saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 2 to 12 carbon atoms having at least one halogen substituent. The reaction takes place rapidly at reflux temperature, and one or more of the operations may be effected continuously. Tripropyl and tributyl borates are made in examples but other suitable alcohols are specified.
