Abstract
955,031. Indicating liquid levels. J. P. CORBETT. March 31,1960 [July 27, 1959], No. 25771/59. Heading G1H. An I.C. engine sump oil level indicator adapted to replace the normal dipstick consists of a tube 11 of such external diameter that it can pass through the dipstick aperture into the sump, a float 13 being disposed within the tube and having secured to its top a thin rod 14 which passes up through the tube 11 into a transparent tube 7 forming an extension of the latter. An index flag 8 which may be coated with a fluorescent material is secured to the end of the rod 14 so that the oil level can be observed and compared with a "normal" oil level marker 10 on the tube 7. The float may have radial lugs 26, Fig. 10, to prevent its adherence to the tube wall and it may be provided with a central hole or cut away side portion to enable gas bubbles in the oil to escape past the float. The oil inlet and air vent respectively at the bottom and top of the tube are restricted to limit the rate of level variation.
