879,429. Indicating liquid levels. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd., S. April 28, 1959 [May 2, 1958; Aug. 7, 1958], Nos. 14133/58 and 25421/58. Class 123(1) A liquid level indicator particularly for a closed fuel tank consists of a housing 11 secured to the top wall 10 of the tank and containing a variable resistance over which slides a contact arm secured to a spindle 14 which extends through the casing. A float arm 15 is secured to the projecting part of the spindle and has a part 19 bent at right-angles thereto in the plane of movement of the arm, a cylindrical float 20 being soldered to the part 19. Stop lugs 17, 18 on the housing prevent the float from contacting the bottom and top of the tank. With this arrangement when the float is at its lowest position the liquid required to maintain the float floating is reduced to a minimum since most of the weight of the float and arm is taken by the spindle 14 whereas as the float rises it sinks deeper into the liquid since it will be supporting an increasing amount of the weight of the system until at the top of the tank the float is almost submerged, thus giving a complete range of indication from "empty" to "full". A weight 25 is adjustable along the arm 15 to allow the depth of immersion of the float at the "full" position to be controlled.
