Abstract
992,254. Indicating liquid-level. L.V.S. (GLOUCESTER) Ltd. Feb. 14, 1963 [Nov. 15, 1961], No. 40946/61. Heading B8N. A dipstick comprises a translucent or transparent tube 1 having an inlet 3 and outlet 4, the outlet being arranged to be closed after the tube has been inserted into a liquid in order that, when the tube is withdrawn, a visible indication of the liquid level is provided, the tube being slidably mounted within a housing 6. The tube, which may be of a synthetic plastic material, is provided with graduations 5. Where extra rigidity is required, a bundle of similar tubes may be used. The tube is slidable within the housing 6 which is transparent and formed with a crank 16 at its upper end, the crank co-operating with a stop plate 15; the surfaces 9, 10, 11, 12 of the housing are provided with graduations 13, 14. In operation, the end of the housing rests on e.g. a barrel, while the tube is moved downwardly through the hole until it reaches the bottom of the liquid. A finger is then placed over the end 17 of the tube and the latter raised whereby the level of the liquid may be read with reference to the appropriate calibration; instead of closing the end of the tube by a finger, a suitable closure member may be used.
