954,977. Mountings for mortars. H.M. PRINCIPAL SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE WAR DEPARTMENT. Oct. 14, 1960 [Oct. 27, 1959], No. 36484/59. Heading F3C. A bipod mounting for a mortar has screwjack elevating gear 8 housed in one leg 2 of the bipod, and a tubular yoke 13 pivotally mounted on a bracket arm 10 fixed to the elevating screw 9 supports the mortar barrel 14 and sighting means (not shown), screw jack type mechanism 21, 22 being provided for tilting the yoke 13 about its pivot 19 for cross-levelling the sighting means. A hand operated bevel 12 is provided for operating the elevating gear 8 and the yoke 13 contains hand operated traversing gear 15. The yoke 13 carries a V-notch carrier 20 for the sighting device and the screw-jack mechanism 21 is connected between one end of the yoke 13 and to a point on the bracket arm 10. The barrel 14, as shown, is secured in a clamp 23 connected to the yoke 13 through a recuperator device 24 for absorbing the firing shock but the barrel may be slidably mounted in a ring support 25, Fig. 2 (not shown) connected directly to the yoke.
