Abstract

926,777. Recuperator mechanisms. SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR DEPARTMENT. Jan. 15, 1962 [Feb. 9, 1961], No. 4847/61. Class 92. A recuperator mechanism for interposition between a machine gun and its mounting comprises a buffer tube 1 and a guide-rod 2 extending therethrough, one connected to or forming part of the gun and the other connected to or forming part of the mounting, the rod 2 being slidably mounted in airtight bushes 9, 10 fitted into the buffer tube. The two sides of a piston 11 attached to the guide-rod communicate through a bleed path whereby the piston, guide-rod and tube form a pneumatic dashpot and two springs 12, 13 urge the guide rod 2 in opposite directions so that when the mechanism is unloaded, the guide rod and buffer tube are maintained in a relative equilibrium position. As shown, the main buffer spring 12 and the run-out spring 13 are located on opposite sides of the piston 11 which is resilient, and a pair of such mechanisms are provided. Yokes 3, 4 connect a pair of buffer tubes and carry lugs for attachment to a tripod 5, Fig. 1 (not shown), whilst yokes 6, 7 connect a pair of guide-rods and form mounting brackets for the gun. The springs may be arranged outside the pneumatic dashpot, e.g. in separate buffer units and in a modification suitable for a tank mounting, the gun barrel may be used as the guide rod and have a piston attached thereto, the buffer tube being an integral part of the mounting and surrounding a portion of the barrel.
