Abstract

954,311. Drying granular material. VEREINIGTE GLANZSTOFF FABRIKEN A.G. July 21, 1961 [July 23, 1960], No. 26560/61. Heading F4G. A process for the continuous drying of granular material, e.g. shredded organic high polymers, comprises continuously supplying the material to a shaft drier in which it is traversed in two separate zones by a drying gas, a larger heated component stream being connected to the upper zone and a smaller, cooled and regenerated component stream being supplied to a lower zone to dry the material heated in the upper zone, the smaller stream mixing with the larger stream beneath the upper zone and flowing therewith through the upper zone and being exhausted therewith. Granular material is dried by passage through a shaft drier in countercurrent to an upper, heated stream of gas, e.g. nitrogen, and a lower cooled, dried gas stream introduced at 20, 18 into upper and lower zones respectively. The material passes into the drier through a pipe 1 and distributer 3 for passage through funnels 6 in a plate 5 having lower tube sections 7 which extend through an intermediate plate 8 and further passage through a space below the tubes 7 having a cooling coil 12. The dried and cooled material is collected in hoppers 13 for removal through openings 14, 16 for withdrawal at B. The larger heated gas stream enters a cavity 21 formed by the walls of the funnels 6, tubes 7 and intermediate plate 8 for passage through apertures 9 in the tubes 7 and upward passage through pipes 10 concentrically mounted within the tubes 7 and funnels 6, the mouths of the pipes 6 being covered with deflecting caps 11. The cooled gas enters at 18 into a space 19 formed between the pipes 7 and rises therethrough and through the funnels 6 in countercurrent to the heated material falling therethrough and mixes with the heated gas stream for exhaustion through an aperture 46. The combined streams pass through a cyclone separator 22 and fan 23 and are then separated, the larger stream passing through a heater 26 before reintroduction to the drier and the smaller passing via a condenser 28, water separator 29, oxidizing apparatus 31, and preferably a further condenser 37 and separator 38, to the inlet 18. The regulation of both the total quantity of the drying gas which is kept in motion and the quantity of gas in the smaller stream is effected in dependence on the pressure in the dryer and/or the quantity of moisture taken up by the smaller stream.
