Abstract

953,869. Two-part couplings; preventing access of moisture, dust and gases; carrying cables through partitions. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Aug. 8, 1960 [Aug. 14, 1959], No. 27825/59. Heading H2E. In a seal in which wires or contact elements extend through holes 5 in a bung 4 of elastomer material e.g. a silicone elastomer, the bung is adhesively secured in an aperture of greater size, in a rigid housing 1, so as to be tensionally prestressed before the insertion of the wires or contact elements. The bung may be moulded in the housing 1 between flanges 2 and 3 after the appropriate surfaces of the housing have been treated with a suitable liquid primer. The shrinkage inherent in the moulding and curing operation produces tensional stress in the bung, thus affording it an increased yielding capacity to accommodate the expansion of holes 5 when contact elements are inserted. Alternatively the bung may be secured in position by applying adhesive to the appropriate surfaces and then expanding the bung by axial compression until the adhesive sets, thus leaving the bung under tensional stress when the compression is removed.
