Abstract
968,707. Two-part couplings. CANNON ELECTRIC CO. June 8, 1961 [Feb. 6, 1961; Feb. 27, 1961], No. 20712/61. Heading H2E. [Also in Division B5] An electrical connector insulator body 18 comprises a relatively hard resilient contact mounting portion 26 and a relatively soft resilient grommet portion 28, the material of the body 18 being continuous from the hard portion 26 to the soft portion 28 so that the body 18 is a unitary structure. Each part 26, 28 of the body 18 is moulded (see Division B5) from elastomer materials, preferably having the same base polymer, the difference in hardness being caused by different quantities of a " hardener " being added to each half during the moulding process. Each part of the two part connector shown includes a threaded shell 16, 56 secured together by screw cap 24, and an end bell 20, 64 which when screwed on to the respective shell presses a sleeve 22, 66 which compresses the soft grommet portions 28, 62 of the insulator bodies 18, 58. The body parts 26, 60 are held in their respective shells by flanges, for example 46, 48, which co-operate with recesses 50, 52. A similar arrangement maintains the sockets and pins in their respective insulator bodies. Each grommet portion 28, 62 is provided with constrictions for example 44, which prevent ingress of water to the pins.
