[Also in Division G3] In a pulp feeding circuit pulp is pumped in a closed circuit having.an inlet duct and a discharge orifice, the pulp which by-passes the discharge orifice being returned via an overflow unit, a condition of operation of which automatically controls the supply of pulp to the inlet duct. In Fig. 1 a pump 2 supplies pulp through ducts 3, 5 to a paper or cardboard-forming discharge orifice 9 and the increase in width from the beginning of duct 3, which is of circular section, to duct 5, which is of rectangular section, is taken care of by a spreader box 4 which may have one or two projections such as 15 to produce uniformity of flow across the width of duct 5. The pulp which passes discharge orifice 9 enters a duct 6 divided by vertical baffles to reduce turbulence and then overflows into a duct 7 leading to the inlet of pump 2. Changes in the level in duct 7, detected electrically at 27, serve to control a servomotor 25 adjusting the supply of pulp through an inlet duct 8 so as to compensate for varying rates of operation of the paper making machine and permit pump 2 to maintain a constant flow. The rate of flow through discharge orifice 9 may be controlled by air pressure or suction applied above the level of the pulp by a pump 20 and adjusted manually and automatically by valves 23 and 24 respectively, Figs. 2-8 (not shown) illustrate suitable shapes for the ducts, baffles and spreader box. The levels of pulp in ducts 6 and 7 may be substantially equal and well above the division between the ducts. In another arrangement the upper portion of the division between ducts 6, 7 is pivoted about a horizontal axis to permit adjustment of the rate of discharge from orifice 9 without the need for pump 20.
