Abstract

1,110,222. Coating apparatus. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. 20 April, 1965 [1 May, 1964], No. 16638/65. Heading D1L. Coating apparatus comprises a trough 21, a guiding roll 11 passing the web to be coated into the trough at 15 and out in an upward direction at 17, and a blade 25 located adjacent the point at which the web leaves the coating liquid and spaced from the web so that a meniscus forms between the blade and the web. One side of the trough 21 is open to the atmosphere as at 23, the other communicates with a reduced pressure chamber 31 by means of a slot 29 which extends the full width of the web to be coated. The reduced pressure in the chamber 31 is adjusted so that the coating liquid is drawn up at least to the height of the bottom of the blade 25 and preferably a little higher, thus creating a hydrostatic head indicated at 45. Coating liquid is fed into the trough 21 through a conduit 35 at the rate at which it is desired to be applied to the web, and is maintained at least at the level of the bottom of the roll 11, at this stage the maximum hydrostatic head is present. The web is passed through the coating liquid and a meniscus is formed between the web and the blade 25, a thin coating being left on the, web as it passes upwards from the meniscus. By virtue of the maximum hydrostatic head being present and thus a maximum downward force being exerted on the meniscus, less coating is applied to the web than intended, and since the rate at which liquid is taken by the web is less than the rate at which liquid is supplied, the level of liquid in the trough rises to say 43. The hydrostatic head and thus the downward force on the meniscus is reduced and consequently more coating liquid stays on the web. Once the point of equilibrium is reached, the apparatus is self-metering so the thickness of coating on the web is automatically adjusted to the rate of supply of liquid to the coating trough. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), a second coating is applied from a reservoir (57) by flowing it, under gravity, over the top surface of the blade (25). The apparatus is particularly applicable to the coating of films and paper with photographic emulsions &c.
