7 Claims. (Cl. 9243) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in the paper making art and is directed more particularly to improvements in apparatus for making paper.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of apparatus for making paper which is flexible in all important respects. That is, stocks of many and various kinds may be used to produce paper and board of numerous and novel characteristics and at speeds resulting in uniform and economical production.
According to novel features of the invention, the construction is such that `components of the apparatus are easily and readily adjustable during operation of the apparatusy all to the end that various kinds and grades of stock may be used and numerous types and grades of product may be produced without the necessity of changing components as is common practice in paper making.
As one feature of the invention, an elongated hollow spokeless cylinder having a forarninous surface is peripherally supported for rotation and provides a hollow center in which various components are disposed for ready access and movability.
As another feature of the invention means is arranged for delivering or applying paper making stock to the cylinder at the ascending side and sheet forming portion thereof as distinguished from apparatus where the cylinder-mould is rotatable in a vat. In this way associated components within the cylinder are readily accessible, and the apparatus may be economically constructed and readily and easily serviced when necessary.
According to a further feature of the invention, the pond structure or the stock receiving components for applying stock to the cylinder is such that various forms and types of stock may be employed as may be desired and required according to the results it is desired to attain.
According to a further feature of the invention, the pond chamber of the apparatus is arranged to receive a supply of stock in excess of that adequate for web or sheet formation to the end that excess stock may be recirculated for the beneficial results obtained in sheet formation and stock recirculation.
As a still further feature of the invention, a novel pond slice is provided which is so formed as to direct stock onto a free forming portion of the foraminous surface of the cylinder. Said slice is adjustable relative to the pond forming components and cylinder both vertically and horizontally and is swingable so that it may be related to the cylinder in different ways thereby to function therewith according to the characteristics'of stock, sheet to be formed, speed of operation, etc.

To these above and other ends and with the foregoing and various other and ancillary features and advantages and objects of my invention as will become more readily apparent as the description proceeds, my invention consists in certain features of novelty, in a mode of operation, and in the combination, organization and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed and more A fully described and referred to in conjunction with the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention for purposes of disclosure.

Referring now to the drawings more in detail the novel features of the invention will be fully described.
One of a pair of transversely spaced similar side frames is shown at 2 in Fig. l. For strength and rigidity said frames may be formed in the shape of inverted Us from metal tubing. Lower ends of the side parts 4 of the frame are secured as by Welding or the like to a sole plate or plates 6 to provide a strong and rigid supporting structure. Longitudinal tubular side struts 8 are secured at their opposite ends to the depending parts 4 of the side frames as by welding or by any other suitable means.
Supporting base members such as are provided with curved seats 12 which will be of suitable bearing material to freely and rotatably support peripherial journal portions 14 at opposite ends of a hollow cylinder indicated by 16. The cylinder is such as to rotate freely on the seats 12 and has a free interior without spokes or the like.

A transverse shaft 20 is rotatable in bearings such as 22 s'ecured to brackets 24 which are fixed to the right hand parts 4 of the side frames. A drive gear or gears such as 26 in mesh with the gear of gears 18 of the` cylinder is fixed to said shaft 20. The cylinder is rotated clockwise accordingly as said shaft 20 is driven by an electric motor or other- Wise all as may be desired.
The cylinder 16 as is common in the art has a perforated peripherial portion 30 between its opposite ends which is covered with woven wire cloth 32 of usual form thereby to provide a foraminous surface for sheet iformation and water drainage, as is usual, see Fig. 3.
At the left of the side frames 2 struts such as 36 suppont a lower wall 38 of a pond or headbox chamber structure. Said chamber includes transversely spaced side Walls 40 extending vertically upwardly from the wall 38 and a rear wall 42. Inner edges of the side walls 40 extend to and conform to the foraminous surface of the .cylinder and may carry sealing means for sealing said walls to said surface. The foraminous surface 32 is shown in Fig. 2 by dash lines for clarity.
Other side walls 44 extend rearwardly relative to the walls 40 which with an outer end wall 46 and a bottom Wall 48, in conjunction with wall 42 form a chamber for stock recirculation purposes. Connections for recirculation may be made with an outlet 49 of wall 48.
A leveling gate plate 52 of usual form is supported by threaded rods 54 which are slidable in a transverse strut 56 relative to wall 42 fixed to the walls 40. Wall 42 terminates at its upper side as shown and the plate 52 may be raised or lowered by nuts 58 on the rods 54 to establish the level of stock which by way of disclosure is indicated by the line L.
A novel pond slice 60 of U shape is provided which has transverse outer and inner walls 64 connected at lower ends by a curving portion 66. Said walls are connected at opposite vertical edges to side walls 68 which are disposed substantially contiguous to inner sides of the side walls 40 and may be sealed thereto if desired. An upper wall 70 of the slice 60 is arranged to provide a stock .recirculating vinlet opening 72. The inner wall 64 of the .slice at its upper end carries a lip 74 which may be adjustable and establishes the level of stock at the ascending side of the cylinder.
The pond slice 60 is not only movable vertically and horizontally but is swingable so that the inner wall 64, lip 74 and lower portion thereof may be positioned relative to the surface of the cylinder and wall 38 in various adjusted positions, as desired.
Carriers are slidable on ledges 81 secured to outer sides of the walls 40, as in Fig. l. Brackets 82 are fixed to the opposite ends of the slice wall 70 and have internally threaded portions 84. Threaded rods 86 in engagement with portions 84 have lower ends 88 which are swivelled in sockets 90 of the carriers 80. Thus it will be seen `that the slice is pivoted in the carriers 80 for swinging and may be raised or lowered by turning the rods 86 in one direction or the other.
Screws 92 in threaded engagement with brackets 94 txed to the walls 40 have ends rotatably engaging the carriers 80. Thus by turning the screws 92 in one direc- `tion or the other the pond slice may be moved horizontally in one direction or the other.
To swing the pond slice levers such as 96 are pivoted at 98 to outer sides of the walls 40 and are provided with elongated slots 100. Studs 102 fixed to the side walls 68 of the pond slice extend through openings 104 of the walls 40 and slot 160 of the levers 96. Brackets 166 lixed to the walls 40 have internally threaded members 103 pivoted therein at 110. Members 112 in threaded engagement with members 108 have links 114 in threaded telescopic engagement therewith and the members 114 at inner ends receive the studs 102. By turning members 112 in one direction or the other the levers 96 are swung to thereby swing the pond slice in one direction or the other to the desired position of adjustment.
Thus by manipulation of the mechanisms the pond slice may be adjusted so that its inner side `wall 64, lip 74 and lower portion 66 may 'oe related to the ascending side of the cylinder for sheet forming with stock of various grades and types. Means other than shown may be employed for adjusting the pond slice and additional `leans may `be used for securing the `slice in adjusted positions if necessary.
One or both side walls 68 of `the pond slice 60 will be provided with a discharge opening 116 which surY rounds `an outlet or outlets 118 of the side wall or walls 40, for stock recirculation in various adjusted positions of the pond slice. Piping may be connected to iianges such as 120 of the openings 118 for connection in a recirculating system.
A save-all shown in section in Fig. l, is supported `from the members 8 of the side frames by hook members 132 of the side walls 134 thereof. An inner transverse end wall 136 of the save-all 130 has a flexible seal member 138 secured thereto by means of an elongated yieldable member 140 and bolt or -screw means 142. Said seal in contact with the inner side of the foraminous surface of the cylinder directs water into the save-all.
A similar seal 144 is secured to a portion 38 of the wall 38 `by .a plate 146 and bolt means 143. The 4inner portion .of the seal 144 is secured `to the plate 146 by a yieldable member and bolt means 152 similar to the meniber 140 and 'the free-end of the seal engages the outer side of the foraminous surface of the cylinder.
It will be noted that the seals extend angularly and substantially vertically from the horizontal and in the direction of Irotation of the cylinder Vfor `the most efficient functions of the seals.
Inner circumferentially extending rails extend around and inwardly `of the upper portions of the side frames 2 and are supported therefrom by a plurality of portions 162, see Fig. 3. An elongated transversely disposed recirculation slice 164 is provided which is preferably concave as shown in Fig. 1.- End walls 166 of said slice carry a rod 168 which is threaded on its opposite ends. Said ends extend through elongated slots 170 of brackets 172 which are carried by the rails 160. The slice 164 may be moved radially `of the cylinder and ltilted to various angular positions `of adjustment as may be desired and is held in adjusted positions by securing members 174, engaging -the threaded ends ofthe rod 163.
A transverse vertically disposed bafe wall 176 extends `between the walls 40 and upwardly from the lower wall 38, seo Fig. 2. Stock may be supplied the apparatus from `any desired inlet means which forms no part of `the present invention. Said stock may enter rthrough one or more openings such as 39 of wall 38 or 43 or wall 42.
Stock flows upwardly over .the wall 176 in the direction of arrow a, beneath the lowery portion 66 `of the pond slice -as indicated by `arrow b `and upwardly between the inner wall 64 of the pond slice and ascending side of the cylinder asit yrotates clockwise, whereby the forming ibers are deposited in a free forming area of the cylinder asis indicated Iby F, Fia. 2.
Stock of various consistencies may be used and of various types and grades for sheet formation of various characteristics at various operating speeds.
Water liiows from the stock `on the free forming portion of the surface F of the cylinder and into the save-all. As
much as'55% to 70% ofthe Water of the stock has been removed at the free forming area whereforsuction boxes are not subsequently called upon for the removal of Water to the extent common with prior art paper making apparatus.
An excess of stock is supplied the pond chamber whereby rthe adjustable plate gate 52 establishes the level L and a portion of excess stock flows over the plate into chamber 50 and out the -outlet 49 thereof for recirculation. Not only is recirculation accomplished but foaming if not entirely eliminated is -reduced to a non-objectionable degree.
lOther excess stock is directed by recirculating slice 164 over into the pond slice 60 as indicated by .arrows c Iand out the 4outlet 118 for recirculating thereby to overcome flocking or thickening of stock thereby to favorably effect sheet formation, grain and other character- -istics desired in paper making. The arrangement of the components is such that dual -recirculation is accomplished to the end that superior results are obtained at very favorable speeds.
Not only does lthe :slice '164 function for recirculation purposes but it prevents stock and wat-er being carried upwardly around and over the top of the cylinder at the higher speeds thereof as well as prevents an excess of water being carried over for removal by suction boxes.
Thus stock is directed to the free forming area of the cylinder. The pond slice may be adjusted so that its inner side and lower portion may be related to the cylinder and wall 38 as is necessary and desired for various types and grades of stock, speed of cylinder, and sheet to be formed. Not only is dual recirculation accomplished but uniform s-tock level is accomplished, foaming is reduced to a desired minimum if not entirely eliminated, flocking yand thickening is overcome, and high speed operation is possible without adverse results.
Water of course may be conducted from the save-all 130 by piping connected to flange 131 thereof.
A plurality of suction boxes 180, 182, 184 and 186 are provided. These extend transversely within the hollow cylinder and have connecting means such as flanges 1-88, 190, 192, `and 194 for connecting to piping extending to a source of suction or more than one such source should that be desired or necessary.
The suction box 180 is disposed on the ascending side of the cylinder at a distance above the free forming area and at the upper portion of the ascending side of the cylinder. 1t may be said lt-hat the sheet or Web is formed in the free forming area without applied suction so that subsequent to the forming there is much less water for extraction than usual and is a decided advantage in that higher speeds are possible.
Suction boxes 180 and 182 yare unitary and all of the suction boxes are similarly adjustable circumferentially and independently of one another on ledges 200 at outer sides of the Iside frames as shown in connnection with suction box 184, in Fig. 3.
Al support 202 of the suction box 184 underlies the ledge 200 and has a threaded stud 204 fixed thereto and extending upwardly therefrom. A clamp 206 on the stud bears on the ledge 200 and the support 202 and a clamp nut 208 is in threaded engagement with the stud 204 so as to clamp the suction box with its suction face closely adjacent the inner side of the foraminous surface 32 of the cylinder.
The suction boxes may be independently and circumferentially adjustable during operation of the apparatus. By being `adjustable the apparatus may be readily and easily adapted for many and various types and grades of stock for lsheets of numerous characteristics and for various operating speeds. The suction boxes are secured in the manner described at their opposite ends.
One or -several press rolls may be provided -as desi-red depending upon the particular requirements of the apparat-us. For purposes of disclosure 4a press roll is shown at 210` and a roll is shown at 212 which mayfunetion as a press and/or a couch roll. Either orboth rollsmay have a resilient surface or a surface of any desired characteristics and a felt may if desired extend around the roll 212 for take-off purposes.
The rolls are carried at their opposite ends by the inner rails at inner sides of the side frames. As shown in Fig. 3, a shaft 214 of the roll 210 is rotatable in a bearing such tas 216 which is secured to the rails 160 by suitable bolt means 118. Bearing or hold down members 220 are carried by the rail parts 160 of the side frames for bearing on the circumferential portions 14 of the cylinder.
By means of the adjustability of the components not only may fthe suction boxes be positioned as desired circumferentially relative to the cylinder and to one another but the relationship of the suction boxes and the rolls may be as desired for different operating conditions.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in .all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than -by the foregoing description, and all modifications and varia-tions as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and sec-ure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
. 1. Paper making apparatus comprising in combination, transversely spaced side frames, a cylinder in the form of a hollow tube having a foraminous surface and circumferential bearing surface on opposite ends thereof, supporting bearing strips on which the bearing surfaces are rollable for supporting the cylinder for rotation, a pond chamber at the ascending side of the cylinder having sid-e and bottom walls and other walls forming 4a recirculatin-g chamber separate from Iand rearwardly of the pond chamber, a unitary pond slice in the pond chamber having -outer and inner substantially vertical transverse walls connected at lower ends with a curving wall portion and having opposite side walls joined to said first named walls and being substantially contiguous to the inner sides Aof the pond side walls, means for admitting iluid stock to the pond chamber, means for moving said pond slice vertically and horizontally and for swinging the same to adjust the inner wall 'and to the ascending side of the cylinder and bottom wall of the pond chamber, means to control the level of stock in the pond chamber and the low of stock into the recirculating chamber for the recirculation of stock, the upper side of said pond slice adapted to receive stock for recirculation thereof and a side wall thereof provided with an outlet registrable with an outlet provided in the side wall of the pond chamber for stock recirculation, means for directing stock into the slice at the upper portion of the ascending side of the cylinder, and the upper edge of the inner wall of the fslice provided with a lip.
2. Paper making apparatus set forth in claim 1 wherein the inner wall of the pond slice is formed to approximate the ascending side of the cylinder.
3. Paper making apparatus comprising in combination, transversely spaced side frames, a cylinder in the form of a hollow tube having a foraminous surface, and means engaging opposite ends of the cylinder rotatably supporting said cylinder, a pond chamber at the ascending side of the cylinder having side and bottom walls and other Walls forming a recirculating chamber separate from and rearwardly of the pond chamber, a unitary pond slice in the pond chamber having outer and inner substantially vertical transverse walls connected at lower ends with a curving wall portion and having opposite side walls joined to said rst named walls and being substantially contiguous to the inner sides of the pond side walls, means for admitting uid stock to the pond chamber, means for moving said pond slice vertically andhorizontally and for swinging the same to adjust the inner wall relative to the ascending side of the cylinder and bottom wall of the pond chamber, means to control the level of stock in the pond chamber and the flow of stock into the recirculating chamber for the recirculation of stock, the upper side of said pond slice adaptedk to receive stock for recirculation thereof and a side wall thereof provided with an outlet registrable with an outlet provided in the side wall of the pond chamber for stock recirculation, means for directing stock into the slice at the upper portion of the ascending side of the cylinder, and the upper edge of the inner wall-of the slice provided with a lip.

In a paper making machine the combination of, a tubular cylinder having a foraminous forming surface and open opposite ends, means rotatably supporting said cylinder, walls forming a pond chamber adjacent the ascending side of the cylinder at the upper portion thereof and a recirculation chamber adjacent the pond cham-V ber, said walls having an inlet for stock to the pond chamber and an outlet from the recirculation chamber, means for controlling the flow of stock from the pond to the recirculation chamber to establish a desired level of. stock in said pond chamber, a slice in said pond chamber having inner and outer and end walls and provided at its upper side with means for the entrance of stock for recirculating ofstock, means for moving said slice vertically and horizontally for adjusting the inner wall thereof relative to the upper portion of the ascending side of the cylinder, certain of the walls forming the pond chamber and slice provided with registrable openings for stock to be recirculated in adjusted positions of the inner wall of the slice, a save-all having an end wall provided with a flexible seal on the inner side of the surface of the cylinder at the lower portion of the ascending side of said surface, and a wall forming the pond chamber having a flexible seal on the outer side of the surface adjacent the tirst-named seal, and suction box means within the cylinder disposed above and separate from said save-all adjacent the upper portion of the ascending surface of the cylinder.

In a paper making machine the combination of, a tubular cylinder having a foraminous forming surface and open opposite ends, means rotatably supporting said cylinder, walls forming a pond chamber adjacent the ascending side of the cylinder at the upper portion thereof and a recirculation chamber adjacent the pond chamber',
said walls having an inlet for stoel: to the pond chamber i and an outlet from the recirculation chamber, means for controlling the flow of stock from the pond to the recirculation chamber to establish a desired level of stock in said pond chamber, a slice in said pond chamber having inner and outer and end walls and provided at its upper side with means for the entrance of stock for recirculating of stock, means for moving said slice vertically and horizontally for adjusting the inner wall thereof relative to the upper portion of the ascending side of the cylinder, certain of the walls forming the pond chamber and slice provided with registrable openings for stock to be recirculated in adjusted positions of the inner wall of the slice, a save-all having an end wall provided with a exible seal on the inner side of the surface 0f the cylinder at the lower portion of the ascending side vof said surface, and a wall forming the pond chamber having a flexible seal on the outer side of the surface adjacent the first-named seal, and suction box means within the cylinder disposed above and separate from said save-all adjacent the upper portion of the ascending surface of the cylinder, and other separate suction box means beyond the first suction box means.
6. Papermaking machine set forth in claim 5 wherein the save-all is disposed within said cylinder and said end wall of the save-all is disposed adjacent the inner side of the ascending side of the cylinder.
7. In a paper making machine the combination of, a tubular cylinder having a foraminous forming surface and open opposite ends, means rotatably supporting said cylinder, walls forming a pond chamber adjacent the ascending side of the cylinder at the upper portion thereof and a recirculation chamber adjacent the pond chamber, said walls having an inlet for stoel; to the pond chamber and an outlet from the recirculation chamber, means for controlling the tlow of stock from the pond to the recirculation chamber to establish a desired level of stock in said pond chamber, a slice in said pond chamber having inner and outer and end walls and provided at its upper side with means for the entrance of stock for recirculating of stock, means for moving said slice vertically and horizontally for adjusting the inner wall thereof relative to the upper portion of thc ascending side of the cylinder, certain of the walls forming the pond chamber and slice provided with registrable openings for stock to be recirculated in adjusted positions of the inner wall of the slice, a save-all having an end wall provided with a flexible seal on the inner side of the surface of the cylinder at the lower portion of the ascending side of said surface and a wall forming the pond chamber having a flexible seal on the outer side of the surface adjacent the first-named seal, and suction box means within the cylinder disposed above and separate from said save-all adjacent the upper portion of the asccnding surface of the cylinder, and other separate suction box means beyond the tirst suction box means, and a second slice for engaging the ascending surface of the cylinder beyond the stock receiving means of the firstnamed slice for directing stock thereinto.
