Abstract
The dry and wet heat resistance of dyed or undyed polyvinyl alcohol fibres or textile products made therefrom, which may have been after-treated with an aldehyde, are improved by treating them with a silicone oil or a solution or emulsion of a silicone oil and then heating them, e.g. to 50 DEG -200 DEG C. for a few minutes to a few hours, to bring about fixation. The silicone may be an organo-siloxane of the formula <FORM:0953540/D1-D2/1> and/or an organo-hydrogen-polysiloxane of the formula <FORM:0953540/D1-D2/2> in which m and the sum (n + p) can have a value greater than zero and less than 4 and n and p each have a value of at least 0.1 and at most 3.8, x is a number greater than 1 and R is an alkyl, alkenyl, cyclo aliphatic, aryl or aralkyl group. The silicone oil may be emulsified with a non-ionic emulsifier, e.g. propylene glycol monobutyl ether, polyethylene glycol 2. ethyl hexyl ether or polyethylene glycol monobutyl ether, or a polyhydric alcohol ester, e.g. glycerine monostearate, polyoxyethylene distearate or propylene glycol monolaurate. The heat treatment may be carried out in the presence of a reaction accelerator, e.g. a zirconium salt.
