Abstract

Linear polyester filaments, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate filaments, are treated with a polyalkylene glycol or an ester or ether thereof, a phosphoric acid ester of an alkanol containing up to six carbon atoms, e.g. triethyl phosphate, an alkylene glycol ether, e.g. butyl carbitol, diacetane alcohol or diacetin, and then heated to a temperature of 390 DEG -430 DEG F. for a period, of time not exceeding one minute while they still carry the treating agent to improve their dyeability and reduce their tendency to pill. The filaments may be treated as a tow of more than 100 filaments at room temperature with an aqueous solution of the treating agent having a pH of 2-12 by padding, spraying or immersion, dried and heat treated by hot air, by contact with a heated surface, by passage through molten metal or other inert fluid or by passage between a pair of hot plates. The heat treatment may be effected with the filaments under tension at least sufficient to prevent shrinkage by more than 5% or to stretch them by 1-40%. Undrawn filaments may be treated with the treating agent, dried at a temperature below 250 DEG F., stretched under conditions which induce crystallization and then subjected to the heat treatment. The filaments may subsequently be dyed with Polyester Bleu B.L.F. and with 1,5-dihydroxy-4-phenylamino-5-nitro-anthraquinone. The polyester fibres may be blended with wool.
