1381181 Aromatic polyamide fibres VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT ISKUSSTVENNOGO VOLOKNA 25 March 1972 14114/72 Heading B5B Heat-resistant fibres are made by wetspinning filaments from a solution containing a polymer having the formula or the formula wherein Ar 1 is selected from the structures X=N; O; S; NH; Y=N; Z=C or N and Ar 2 is selected from the following structures drawing down the as spun filament to effect preorientation and stretching, treating the drawndown filament in the wet-gel state with deionized water and/or an aqueous alcoholic solution, drying the filament and spot-heating the dried filament at a temperature within the range from 250‹ to 600‹ C. The filament to be spot-heated may enter a heating zone at a temperature which is 75 to 350 degrees C. less than the temperature to which the filament is to be heated, and preferably is simultaneously stretched to a draw ratio of 1À15 to 1À20. Suitably the concentration of polymer in the spinning solution is 2 to 10% by weight; the filament may be spun into a spinning bath containing an aqueous solution of an amide, preferably containing an inorganic salt of a metal of Groups I or II of the Periodic System, or may be spun into a spinning bath containing an aqueous solution of sulphuric acid having a concentration of at least 65% by weight, preferably containing an aliphatic alcohol having 1 to 8 carbon atoms. Draw-down may be effected to a draw ratio of not more than 1À8 : 1. Filaments so made after spot-heating may show a strength of 140 to 250 kg./mm<SP>2</SP>. and an initial modulus of 6000 to 12,000 kg./mm<SP>2</SP>.
