Abstract

Undyed fibres, threads or fabrics are treated with a quaternary ammonium compound of a polymer of a N-heterocyclic compound having a vinyl group directly attached to a nitrogen or carbon atom of the heterocyclic radical. The compound may be applied in true or colloidal aqueous solution or emulsion which may also contain a lubricant, a size, an ethylene oxide condensate with a fatty acid of high molecular weight, or an emulsion of a natural fat or oil. The basic vinyl compound may be N-vinylimidazole, N - vinyl - 2 - methylimidazole, N-vinyl - 2 - phenylimidazole, N - vinyl - 2-methylolimidazole, N - vinylbenzimidazole, 2-vinylbenzimidazole, or 2-vinyl pyridine, and may be quaternized with an alkyl or aralkyl halide, ethylene chlorhydrin, mono- or di-alkyl sulphates (dimethyl sulphate is specified) or esters of sulphonic acids. The compounds may be copolymerized with non-basic monomers. The fibrous materials treated may be of cellulose acetate, polyamides, polyurethanes, polyvinylchloride, polyacrylonitrile, polyesters of glycol and terephthalic acid or a copolymer of vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile.
