In a door latch comprising a spring-loaded pivoted bell-crank lever latch member 5 having a pair of pintle stubs 4, 4 projecting from the top and bottom edges of the lever on the pivotal axis thereof, a front plate or equivalent part 1 of the latch case is provided, having an aperture 2 through which one arm of the latch member 5 projects, the plate being provided with two vertically opposed pairs of bearing recesses 3, 3 symmetrically placed on either side of a vertical centre line through the aperture, so that one pair or the other of the recesses can receive the pintle stubs in any of four relative positions of the latch member. As shown a closing plate 6 retains the stubs 4 in place. The latch lever 5 is connected by pivoted links 9 to a slide block 10 on which bears a rocking lever 11 loaded by an adjustable spring 12 to cause the latch lever to pivot in either direction from a dead centre position. Pivotal movement of the latch lever is checked by a dashpot 13. Specifications 803,834 and 952,593 are referred to.
