Abstract

A material having uterine contractant activity is extracted from the bark, roots or leaves of Albizia gummifera, A. grandibracteata and A. chinensis by extraction with water, a C1-4 alkanols or a polar organic solvent containing at least 20% v/v. of dissolved water. The raw material may be previously extracted with a non-polar solvent e.g. petroleum ether or benzene to remove resins, fats of waxes. By removal of the solvent, the active material is obtained as a viscous mass which may be redissolved in water for pharmaceutical use or for further purification by precipitation with an anhydrous lower (C1-4) alkanol, ether or ketone and the precipitated material may be further purified by dissolving in water and treating the solution with lead sub-acetate to remove impurities. Reference is made to the administration of the extract to animals by the intravenous, intraperitoneal and oral routes.
