Glucosides.-A crystalline product useful in medicine is obtained by extracting apocynaceµ with suitable solvents, such as carbontetrachloride, benzene, chloroform, or dichlorethylene, freeing the extract from resinous constituents by precipitation and filtration, and isolating the product from the filtrate, after purification with basic lead acetate &c., without subjecting the material at any stage to the prolonged action of boiling water or steam. Commercial extracts of apocynaceµ may also be extracted with organic solvents, preferably after first treating with inert substances, such as sand, kieselguhr, sawdust, anhydrous sodium sulphate, &c. The product mav also be separated from resinous impurities by extraction with solvents such as ether in which its solubility is different from that of the impurities.
