Abstract

A bivalent metal salt of a diorgano dithiophosphoric acid is obtained by reacting one or more dialkyl dithiophosphoric acids with from 1 to 14% (based on the total weight of the dialkyl dithiophosphoric acid or acids) of an alkyl phenol to effect partial transesterification and reacting the resulting product with one or more of the oxides, hydroxides and carbonates of one or more bivalent metals. The alkyl groups in the dialkyl dithiophosphoric acid may be primary, secondary or tertiary alkyl groups, preferably containing 2 to 12 carbon atoms, and may be the same or different. Specified bivalent metals are zinc, barium, calcium and magnesium and preferred salts for use as lubricating oil additives (see Division C5) are the zinc salts although mixtures of salts containing zinc and barium, calcium or magnesium are also suitable for the purpose. The alkyl phenols used may contain one or more alkyl groups and are preferably branched chain mono-alkyl phenols in which the alkyl group is a tertiary alkyl group, e.g. tert. butyl or tert. octyl. In the example given the transesterification reaction is carried out by maintaining the reactant mixture at 80 DEG C. for 1 hour in a stream of nitrogen.ALSO:A lubricating oil contains as additive a metal salt of a diorgano dithiophosphoric acid obtained by reacting one or more dialkyl dithiophosphoric acids with from 1 to 14% (based on the total weight of the dialkyl dithiophosphoric acid or acids) of an alkyl phenol to effect partial transesterification and reacting the resulting product with one or more of the oxides, hydroxides or carbonates of one or more bivalent metals especially zinc, barium, calcium or magnesium. The lubricating oil is suitably a mineral lubricating oil and the metal salt is preferably a zinc salt, although mixtures of salts containing zinc and either barium, calcium or magnesium are also suitable. The salts can be mixed with common dispersing-detergent agents for lubricating oils, e.g. polyvalent metal salts of sulphurized hydrocarbons or of sulphurized alkylphenols. The alkyl groups in the dialkyl dithiophosphoric acid may be primary, secondary or tertiary alkyl groups, preferably containing 2 to 12 carbon atoms, and may be the same or different. The alkyl phenol reactants may contain one or more alkyl groups and are preferably mono-alkyl phenols in which the alkyl group is a tertiary alkyl group, e.g. tert.-butyl or tert.-octyl.
