Abstract

The invention comprises oil-soluble compositions of metal with hydroxyaromatic compounds, having a metal ratio of greater than 2 obtainable by heating a fluid mass containing an alkylated hydroxyaromatic compound and at least 2 equivalents of a basic inorganic compound of a metal of Groups I and II of the Periodic Table per equivalent of aromatic compound, to drive off substantially all free water which may be present, and treating the product with CO2 until its titratable basicity is substantially reduced. Preferred aromatic compounds are those containing an alkyl group of at least 6 carbon atoms, e.g. 2-methylamyl-4 diisobutyl, tetrapropyl, octadecyl and polyisobutyl, although cycloalkyl groups, e.g. cyclohexyl and methylcyclohexyl groups, may be present. Substituents such as halogen atoms and nitro and alkoxy groups may be present in the aromatic compound. Basic metal compounds mentioned are oxides, hydroxides, carbonates, bicarbonates sulphides and hydrosulphides. Alkali and alkaline earth metal compounds are preferred. Water is added to the reaction mixtures to fluidize the metal compound. Heating with CO2 usually takes place at above 100 DEG C. The neutralization number of the product should be less than about 10. The amount of CO2 used is in excess of 25 per cent by weight of that of the metal phenate being treated. The products are dispersants for mineral lubricating oils (see Group III. In illustrative examples, products are obtained by heating at temperatures varying from 150 DEG to 170 DEG C. in the presence of carbon dioxide and optionally a mineral oil as a diluent, fluid masses obtained from polyisobutyl- or dieicosyl-phenol, or an alkylation product of hydroquinone with polyisobutene, or octyl-b -naphthol, with the addition of water and barium oxide or sodium or lithium hydroxide or mixtures of barium oxide with sodium or potassium hydroxide.ALSO:Oil-soluble combinations of metal with hydroxyaromatic compounds, having a metal ratio of more than 2 and obtainable by heating a fluid mass containing an alkylated hydroxyaromatic compound and at least 2 equivalents of a basic inorganic compound of a metal of Groups I and II of the Periodic Table per equivalent of aromatic compound, to drive off substantially all free water which may be present, and treating the product with carbon dioxide until its titrable basicity is substantially reduced, are added to mineral lubricating oils to serve as dispersants. The neutralization number of the phenolic product should be less than about 10. The preparation of the additive may be effected in a mineral oil diluent. Preferred aromatic compounds are those containing an alkyl group of at least 6 carbon atoms, e.g. 2-methylamyl-4, diisobutyl, tetrapropyl, octadecyl and polyisobutyl groups, although cycloalkyl groups, e.g. cyclohexyl and methylcyclohexyl groups, may be present. The aromatic compounds may contain substituents such as halogen atoms and nitro and alkoxy groups. Basic metal compounds mentioned are oxides, hydroxides, carbonates, bicarbonates, sulphides and hydrosulphides. Alkali and alkaline earth metal compounds are preferred. Water is added to the reaction mixture to fluidize the metal compound. Treatment with carbon dioxide usually takes place at above about 100 DEG C. The amount of carbon dioxide used is in excess of 25 per cent by weight of that of the metal phenate being treated. The dispersants may be used in lubricating oils alone or with other additives such as metal mahogany sulphonates, especially a carbon dioxide-treated basic sulphonate obtained by heating a normal metal sulphonate with a basic metal compound and treating the product with carbon dioxide. In examples products are obtained by heating at temperatures varying from 150-170 DEG C. in the presence of carbon dioxide and optionally a mineral oil as diluent, fluid masses obtained by adding water to polyisobutyl- or di-eicosylphenol, or an alkylation product of hydroquinone with polyisobutene, or octyl-b -naphthol, admixed with barium oxide or sodium or lithium hydroxide or mixtures of barium oxide with sodium or potassium hydroxide.
