Abstract

1391847 Overbased lubricant additives CONTINENTAL OIL CO 17 April 1972 [17 May 1971] 17517/72 Headings C4X and C5F Overbased Mg, Cd, or Ba alkylphenates or sulphurized alkylphenates, useful as additives for lubricating oils, are made by : (1) mixing (a) 3-80 pts. by wt. of an alkylphenol of formula where R is C 4 -C 30 aliphatic hydrocarbyl and n = 1 or 2, provided that the total number of carbon atoms in R n is 8-40 or a sulphurized alkylphenol made therefrom; (b) 0À1-95 pts. by wt. of oil boiling above 200‹ C.; (c) 0À5-250 pts. by wt. of process solvent boiling below 150‹ C.; (d) 0À2-14 pts. by wt. H 2 O; (2) adding to the mixture, while it is at 20-55‹ C. an overbasing amount of a solution of Mg, Ca or Ba in a glycol ether of formula R-OCH 2 CH 2 OH where R is C 1 -C 6 alkyl, or where R is C 1 -C 4 alkyl; (3) then adding to the mixture, while it is at 55-100‹ C. and at a temperature higher than in (2), a neutralizing amount of a solution of the same cation in the same glycol ether as in (2); (4) removing volatiles by heating. The overbasing amount of metal ions is 0À1-5 equivalents per equivalent of phenol, the total amount of Ca or Ba added is 0À4-50 pts. by wt. or 0À4-10 pts. by wt. in the case of Mg, and the amount of water in step 1(d) is sufficient to provide 1À0-2À5 moles per mole of dispersed Mg, Ca or Ba ions. The diluent oil may be mineral or synthetic, (many specified) and the process solvent may be a hydrocarbon, primary C 1 -C 6 alkanol or C 3 -C 8 glycol ether. The mixture of step (1) may also contain 0À1-50 pts. by wt. of oil-soluble sulphonic acid per 100 pts. of alkylphenol or sulphurized alkyl phenol.
