Abstract
1392248 Overbased sulphurized alkyl phenols; lubricants CONTINENTAL OIL CO 3 Nov 1972 [10 Nov 1971] 50751/72 Headings C4X and C5F Overbased magnesium or calcium salts of sulphurized alkyl phenols are made by (a) mixing 0À2-14 parts by wt. of water, 0À5-200 parts by wt. of a process solvent boiling below 190 C. and 4-80 parts by wt. of where R = aliphatic C 4-30 hydrocarbyl, n = 1, or 2, the total number of C atoms in the substituent(s) R being 8-40; (b) while the mixture is at 15-100 C. adding an overbasing amount (0À1-5 equivalents metal per equivalent of alkylphenol), of an alkoxy alkanol solution of a magnesium or calcium alkoxy alkoxidecarbonate complex containing 0À1-11 wt. per cent of Mg or 0À1-17 wt. per cent of Ca; (c) while the mixture is at 50-100 C., adding a neutralizing amount (0À95-1À25 equivalents metal per equivalent of alkyl phenol), of the above carbonate complex; and (d) removing volatiles by heating. Sulphur (0À5-20 parts by wt.), is added at any stage prior to stage (d), the amount of water in stage (a) is enough to provide 0À75-3 moles per mole of dispersed metal, and the alkoxy alkoxide-carbonate complex has formula where M = Mg or Ca, R=C 1-6 alkyl and x = 0À5-1À5. The alkoxy alkanol solvent has formula ROCH 2 CH 2 OH wherein R=C 1-6 alkyl. A non-volatile diluent oil, e.g. a mineral, animal, vegetable or synthetic lubricating oil (bp. above 200 C.), may be added at stage (a) such that the final product contains 4-95 parts by wt. of oil. An oil-soluble sulphonic acid may also be incorporated at stage (a). Removal of volatiles (stage (d)) may be followed by blowing with CO 2 at 140-200 C. The products are used as lubricant additives.
